Frequently asked questions

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a holistic philosophy of health care. This approach to health care means that naturopathic doctors treat people as individuals by addressing the physical, environmental, lifestyle, and emotional aspects of health. You are more than a diagnosis or symptom.

Naturopathic medicine is a complementary form of medicine that can be used along-side conventional medical care. Best outcomes are achieved when both naturopathic and conventional medicine work together.

What conditions do Naturopathic Doctors treat?

A Naturopathic Doctor (ND) can assist with most health conditions. The best way to see if naturopathic medicine can help you and your concerns is to book a free 15 mi-nute meet and greet with Dr. Anastasia D’Annibale, ND

Anastasia has a clinical interest in women’s health and fertility. She looks to find con-tributing factors or the underlying cause to acne, PMS, irregular cycles, and heavy or painful periods to properly address these concerns. She can help answer questions you may have about menopause and peri-menopause and how these hormonal changes impact your health. She can offer treatments that may help ease this transi-tion. If you are having difficulties conceiving or maintaining a pregnancy, there are in-vestigations to consider and naturopathic treatments that may help increase your chances of a successful pregnancy.

What types of treatments do Naturopathic Doctors use?

NDs may suggest lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, botanical medicine, acu-puncture, or nutritional supplements. A combination of treatments is usually recom-mended.

Naturopathic medicine blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. We now have, and are continuing to have, more scientific research that supports and explains how natural forms of medicine affect our health. However, not all natural remedies have undergone studies to support or refute their traditional uses. In these cases, NDs consider the mechanisms of how these remedies are known to or suspected to act in the body and weigh the potential benefits and risks for use.

What can be expected from appointments with a Naturopathic Doctor?

Your first visit will be 60-90 minutes. We spend that time listening to you explain your experience with your health concerns. You are the expert on how you feel. Physical exams will also be performed that are relevant to your health concerns. We will also discuss diagnostic tests if applicable. NDs can order blood work, such as thyroid tests, hormone panels, cholesterol panels, blood sugar, and vitamin and mineral deficien-cies.

At the end of the first visit, we will be begin to discuss treatment options and start to form our plan going forward. Depending on the complexity of your case, treatments may or may not be given in the first appointment. Second visits are usually a 45 mi-nute appointment scheduled 3 to 6 weeks later. The frequency and duration of follow-up visits will vary based on health concerns and treatment plans.

What should you bring to the first appointment?

Bring any prescription medications and supplements you are taking. To avoid any po-tential harmful interactions between naturopathic treatments and pharmaceuticals, we need to know what you are taking. You may already be on the right track to addressing your health concerns with supplements, we just may need to adjust the form or dose to achieve the potential benefits.

A copy of recent blood work results and any related imaging reports would also be beneficial to further understand your health concerns. Contact the clinic of your medi-cal doctor to pick up a copy to bring to your appointment. If you are unsure if this ap-plies to you, we can discuss it at your first appointment or in a free 15 minute meet and greet.

Do insurance companies cover Naturopathic services?

Most private insurance companies cover Naturopathic care. Policies often cover blood work and other laboratory tests ordered by an ND as part of Naturopathic care. Contact your insurance provider for details on coverage. OHIP does not cover Naturopathic services or laboratory tests ordered by an ND.
